Studio Visit: Kay Sekimachi

After majoring in fine art in college with a focus in wearable arts, fiber arts have always been a major draw for me. Artist & Berkeley native Kay Sekimachi's latest collection strikes the perfect mix of fine art and design. Full of found objects, specifically ones that washed up on the beach. Sekimachi "combed the sandy beaches and the lava-formed tide pools of Puako Bay (on the big island),  she harvested shells, bits of coral, fossils, fish vertebrae, and the delicate bones of birds, sea urchin spines and other oceanic ephemera with dedicated rigor but no particular endgame in mind." All of this trolling paid off as Sekimachi was able to successfully weave the sea.
